The original text
A translation and local adaptation of The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare into a stage version of "Kaaps" (a variant of Afrikaans spoken in the Cape). The play is also transposed to the Cape Flats. First performed in 1970 and published in Cape Town by Buren in 1971.
Performance history in South Africa
1970: Directed by Carel Trichardt for PACT, with the title Kinkels in die Kabel. The play opened at the Breytenbach Theatre on 15 April 1970. The cast were Errol Ross, Paul Eilers, George Ballot, Francois Stemmet, Frantz Dobrowsky, Abri le Roux, Nigel Vermaas, Price Coetzee, Janice Honeyman, Lynette Marais and Marie Koeleman. Design by Patricia Slavin. Choreography by Errol Ross.
1971: Presented as Kinkels in die Kabel by the University of Cape Town’s Speech and Drama Department at the Little Theatre in April, directed by Robert Mohr.
1979: Directed by William Egan for CAPAB, opening in the Nico Malan Theatre 6 April 1979. Designs by Raimond Schoop, lighting by John T. Baker. The cast were Brümilda van Rensburg, Willem de la Querra, Neels Coetzee, Johan Esterhuizen, Johan Botha, Allan Dyssel, Marko van der Colff, Martin Crous, Amanda Strydom, Sandra Ferreira, Melanie-Ann Sher, Trix Pienaar. This production was also performed at the Monument Theatre in Grahamstown in May 1979.
1981: PACT, directed by Carel Trichardt featuring Magda Beukes, Klasie Coetzee, Johan Blignaut, Nico Liebenberg, Pierre van Pletzen, Eric Nobbs, Graham Weir, Trudie Lamprecht. Designs by Frances Michaletos.
1981: In 1981 a PACOFS production directed by Sandra Kotzé visited several venues in KwaZulu Natal. Costumes were designed by Dicky Longhurst. Presented by PACOFS as part of the Republic Festival at the Alhambra Theatre, Durban, directed by Sandra Kotzé, May 1981. The cast were Willem Vermaas, Willem de la Querra, Pieter Brand, Hugo Taljaard, Henry Mylne, Roelf Laubscher, André Snyman, Lida Meiring, Antoinette Kellermann, Ronel Kriel, Shareen Swart, Anna Cloete. Lighting by Brian Evans, sound by Hannes Reyneke.
1989: Directed by Marthinus Basson for KRUIK Toneel, opening 9 December 1989 at the Nico Malan Theatre starring June van Merch, Neels Coetzee, Soli Philander, André Samuels, Gustav Geldenhuys, Raél Mercuur, Willie Fritz, Peter Butler, Antoinette Kellermann, Fiona Coyne, Gretha Brazelle. Design by Birrie le Roux, lighting by Malcolm Hurrell, music by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.
1995: Staged for CAPAB in the Arena at the Nico Malan Theatre, directed by Mark Graham, with Peter Butler, Ivan Abrahams, Gail Reagon, Denise Newman, Noel Oostendorp, Shaun Arnolds, Denver Vraagom, Nazli George, Joseph Mitchell, Sizwe Msutu, Vinette Ebrahim, James Raubenheimer, and others, in March and the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in April 1995. Design by Michael Mitchell, lighting by Malcolm Hurrell, music by Zulfah Otto-Sallies.
