Anna Cloete (1916-1999). Actress on stage, television and film .

Biography

Born in Griekwastad. She was married to James Norval, whom she had met on tour in Postmasburg, and they had a daughter, Paddy Norval.

Her career started in 1935 when she played the role of Paddy in an Afrikaans version of Paddy the Next Best Thing. She then joined the James Norval Geselskap. Worked for NTO in 1951 and 1952, from 1953 freelanced with her husband. They later worked for PACT and ither Performing Arts Councils and in film. After his death in 1970, she continued working, also appearing in a number of TV dramas and films.

She died on 10 February 1999.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

For Die Norval Geselskap she appeared in touring productions of plays like Wat liefde doen, Moenie Oor My Ween (as "Kosie"),

Performed with CAPAB in Oom Wanja, Ampie, Die Ryk Weduwee (as "Christine Vermaak", 1974 and 1976), Ousus (1972) and Op Hoop van Seën (1982).

With PACT she appeared in Hedda Gabler, Die Dans van die Reier, Kringloop van die Liefde, As Ons Twee Eers Getroud Is. Bruidjie Dit en Bruidjie Dot.

Other productions include Man van Cirene, Anastasia, Agt Vroue, Bart Nel, Cyrano de Bergerac, Laat-Februarie 1922, Faan se Stasie, Die Onwillige Weduwee, Die Hekse van Salem, Die Plaasvervangers, Die Pophuis, Satansloon, Ghosts, Kinkels innie Kabel, Die Vrek, Die Tragedie van Romeo en Juliet, Die Spaanse Vlieg, Titus Andronicus, Mattewis en Meraai, Die Laaste van die Takhare, Die Koningin en die Rebelle'.

As a playwright, she wrote plays like Simson en Delila, Vicki die Strandlopertjie, Kind van die See, Wie Flous die Ouvrou Nou?, Vergeet My Nie, Die Doodloop-straatjie, Die Ontvoering.


On television she appeared in Die Ryk Weduwee and Die Koster. Film roles in Spore in die Modder, Oom Paul Paul Krüger

Awards, etc

In 1990 she was awarded an award for exceptional cultural achievement (promotion of culture) by the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (FAK).
