Cecil Pym

Cecil Pym (19*-19*). Long time stage designer and stage carpenter at the Little Theatre in Cape Town.

Biography

The son of Roland Pym, who was chief scene painter and builder for Leonard Rayne. Jack Bligh brought him along in 1937 to the Little Theatre, where he worked until 1960.

Among the many productions for which he designed or built sets were Point of Departure (1952), The Middle Watch, A Woman of No Importance, The Ascent of F6, The Tidings Brought to Mary, The River Line, Spring 1600, Berkeley Square, Lottie Dundass, Dear Brutus, Home of the Brave, Martine, Captain Carvallo, Lady Windermere's Fan, Venus Observed, I Have Been Here Before, The Boy David, The Man of Destiny, The Critic, Cockpit, Uncle Harry, The Knight of the Burning Pestle, Le Paquebot Tenacity, The Firstborn, Time and the Conways, Life With Father, The Apple Cart, Tiger at the Gates, Sixteen, The Lady's not for Burning, Heartbreak House, Mrs Warren's Profession, Major Barbara, Die Goue Kring, Salomé Dans!, The Government Inspector, The Madwoman of Chaillot, Gas Light, Sister Angelica, The Oresteia, The Glass Menagerie, Beauty and the Beast, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Eurydice, The Cherry Orchard, Caucasian Chalk Circle (Walter Tillemans in Antwerp and executed under the direction of Cecil Pym1959), The House of Bernarda Alba (1951), Waiting for Godot (1955-6).
