Pieter Brand. (195*-2018) Stage, TV and film actor and director.

Also billed as Pieter Brandt in some cases

Biography

Trained at the University of Pretoria Drama Department, where he later also taught for a while.

Pieter died on 22 April, 2018.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

While still a student, he became a co-founder, with Danie Burger, of Dinkteater (Think Theatre) in Pretoria, for which he acted in and directed a number of plays.

After the demise of Dinkteater, he worked for PACT, PACOFS, SWAPAC and other companies. Later also for the SABC and in the 1990s became a lecturer University of Pretoria Drama Department.


Among his more memorable roles was in Reza de Wet’s Op Dees Aarde.

For PACOFS he has appeared in Romeo and Juliet, Met Permissie Gesê (1982), Snoopy!!!, Die Keiser (1993) and Ampie. For PACT he had roles in Koning Lear, Die Storm, Woyzeck, Dalk, Not to Die Today.

Some of the many other productions he played in are Bloedlyn, Macbeth (1992), Confetti, Don Juan onder die Boere, Luc, Nag, Generaal, Plaston: DNS-Kind, Pantagleise, Die Hekse van Salem, The Duchess of Malfi, Drie Engeltjies op Duiwelseiland, Kinkels innie Kabel, Taraboemdery, Die Verhoor, Vereeniging, Vereniging, Gulls, Houd-den-Bek, Om 'n Jakkalsbessie, Hond se Gedagte (1981), Die Laaste Strooi (1998).

He directed Eskoriaal, 'n Lam vir die Pase, Smallholding, The Crucible (2011).

Film and TV work:

He had roles in Gemini (1980), Ampie (1982), Thicker Than Water (1986), The Fourth Reich (1990), Nag van die 19de (1991). Ballade vir 'n Enkeling II (1993),

Awards, etc

He won numerous awards for his stage work over the years, with no fewer than 9 Vita Awards. He was awarded two DALRO Awards.
