The orginal play
Written the American playwright, children's novelist, and educator, the play revolves around a dysfunctional family consisting of single mother Beatrice and her two daughters, Ruth and Tillie, who try to cope with their abysmal status in life.
Performance history in South Africa
1971: Performed as The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-moon Marigolds by PACT Drama in September 1971, directed by Leonard Schach with Marjorie Gordon, Janice Honeyman, Kerry Arnell, Wilma Stockenström, Elizabeth Rae. Decor by Richard Cook.
1973: Die Effek van Gammastrale op Goudgeel Afrikaners was performed in the Little Theatre, Cape Town in April 1973 by CAPAB, starring Karin Theron, Marga van Rooy, Mary Dreyer, Reza de Wet and Angelique Rockas. Directed by Robert Mohr, with decor designed by Peter Krummeck, lighting by Pip Marshall. The stage manager was Marcel van Heerden. This production was also presented at the H.B. Thom Theatre 26-28 April 1973.
1974: : Performed by PACOFS in 1974, directed by Ernst Eloff, starring Elize Cawood and Annelize van der Ryst.
1987: Die Effek van Gammastrale op Goudgeel Afrikaners performed as a Universiteitsteater Stellenbosch production starring Louise van Zyl, Veronica Lotz, Amor Engelbrecht, Christa de Jager and Ina Vermeulen, directed by Juanita Swanepoel. Roelof Temmingh composed special music for the production.
1981: Die Effek van Gammastrale op Goudgeel Afrikaners (as translated by Ernst Eloff) was performed by the University of the Orange Free State Drama Department at the Scaena Theatre 11-19 September 1981, directed by Nico Luwes with Antoinette Kellermann, Marchelle Verwey, Martie Watson, Ina van Biljon and Liande Marais.
1991: Performed The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-moon Marigolds by the Milnerton Players, Cape Town.
2011: Performed The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-moon Marigolds by Framesby High School, Port Elizabeth, at the Vryfees, Bloemfontein.

Apparently Ernst Eloff did a new Afrikaans translation by the same title in 1981.
