He is the son of Fred Engelen and Tine Balder.

He studied at the Stellenbosch University Drama Department.
Career

As a student he had a role in Don Juan onder die Boere.
Jan played the lead in Seneca's Oedipus at the Doornfontein Arena in 1971, directed by Schalk Jacobsz. Other roles for PACT included The Fantasticks (1972), Investigation into the Death of a Greek (1973), Dubbelspel met die Dood (1974), Plaston: DNS-Kind (1974), Die Rebellie van Lafras Verwey, The Birds ,
He directed Die Bywoners’s production of the first translation of the Fugard play Hello and Goodbye called Hallo en Koebaai starring Schalk Jacobsz and Elna Potgieter at Upstairs at the Market in 1981.
