Born in the Free State in 1961, he matriculated in 1978 from Sasolburg High School. He joined the SADF in 1979 and was commissioned as an officer.
After his national service he enrolled in Potchefstroom University for a Drama degree. After a post graduate diploma at the end of 1984, he made his professional debut at the then SWAPAC arts council in Windhoek.

He acted in student productions of Ubu Roi (1993), Guernica (NAF) and Ek, Anna van Wyk (Kampustoneel) (1994). Directed and starred in Die Verdoemde se Fiets 1984.
