Romeo en Julia (studie van een verdrinkend lichaam) ("Romeo and Julia - Study of a Drowning Body") is a Flemish play by Peter Verhelst (1962-)[1], based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The text

A dark and violent reinterpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, undertaken for Het Zuidelijk Toneel by Peter Verhelst and first performed by them in 1998.

Translations and adaptations

The Flemish text was translated into Afrikaans by Marthinus Basson as Romeo en Julia (Studie van 'n Verdrinkende Liggaam). (Also found as Romeo en Julia or Romeo + Julia)

Performance history in South Africa

2005: The Afrikaans version first produced in South Africa in 2005 by Vleis, Rys en Aartappels, directed and designed by Marthinus Basson and featuring Rolanda Marais, Laudo Liebenberg, Basson, Antoinette Kellermann, Jana Cilliers, Dawid Minnaar, Mbulelo Grootboom and Jannie Gagiano. It premiéred at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees in March.
