The Shipwreck (by Brandes?)
The Shipwreck is the name given to a "ballet" performed in Cape Town on 27 May 1815. According to F.C.L. Bosman (1928: pp. 130 and 146) it may possibly have been an English version of De Schipbreuk, of De Korsaren op het Eiland Ivica performed in Cape Town by an unnamed Dutch youth theatre group (possibly related to a similar French company in Cape Town at the time) in the African Theatre on 18 and 25 August 1810.
In its turn he suggests that the Dutch version may be a balletic adaptation of Miß Fanny, oder Der Schiffbruch ("Miss Fanny or the shipwreck"), a German tragedy in five acts by Johann Christian Brandes (1735-1799).
