Obed Baloyi (1970- ). South African actor and director.

Biography

Born in 1970 and started acting in 1987 while still in school.

Training

Career

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Best known for his role as school taxi driver Prins in the fourth season of the SABC1 youth drama series Soul Buddyz (2007). In 1996 he formed Mangava Drama Group and wrote the play Ga-Mchangani which was staged at the Market Theatre Laboratory 7th Community Festival. His play went on to the Zwakala Festival and won a Main Stream at the Market Theatre. In 1999, his play Via Soweto was staged at the Barney Simon Young Directors and Playwrights Festival.

Since 2000 Baloyi has focused on television work, which includes appearances in the series Dube on Monday, Emzini Wezinsizwa, Yizo Yizo 3 and Heartlines. In 2008 played Blues, a regular character in the second season of the SABC1 drama series A Place Called Home. Also starred as Tsutsuma in the SABC2 sitcom Ga Re Dumele, from 2010-2013. Took parts in South African productions: Cuppen (2006), Triomf (2008), The Philanthropist (2009), Pilot (2009), Jozi (2010), Laugh Out Loud (2011).
