Biography

Training

Trained at UCT Drama School.


Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

As Actor

Joined CAPABto play in productions such as Shrivings, Much Ado About Nothing, Boeing Boeing, Hamlet and Hayfever. Last production as permanent member of CAPAB was You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown in which he played Snoopy.

Musicals: Fiddler on the Roof; Kiss Me Kate; Show Boat; Hello Dolly; Sound of Music.


Performed in Shrivings, Die Paddas, Roulette, Much Ado about Nothing, Boeing Boeing, Oh What a Lovely War, Hayfever (as “Simon”), You're a Good Man Charlie Brown (as “Snoopy” with CAPAB), Ross (with PACT), Fiddler on the Roof (as “Motel”), Show Boat (as “Frank” with CAPAB) and in Relatively Speaking (as “Greg” with CAPAB).

Roles in **, Don't Drink the Water by Woody Allen (NAPAC, 1980), * GODAWA, Philip. He starred in NAPAC’s production of Noël and Gertie together with Andre Hattingh at the Leonard Rayne Theatre in 1986. He starred in Lerner and Lowe’s Gigi at the Pretoria State Theatre in 1992. (Tucker, 1997)


Spent 5 years in England appearing in various theatres and plays.

Back in SA: Noël and Gertie; Private Lives. Prof Higgins in My Fair Lady; Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar (both for NAPAC); Gaston in Gigi for PACT, 1992

As director

He directed Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! in 1993. Directed a Rogers and Hammerstein tribute show for NAPAC. Directed The Sound of Music for PACOFS. Directed Oklahoma!. Resident Director "The Phantom of the Opera" at Really Useful Group Ltd,


TV work

Presented the weekly arts programmes When Movies Were Movies; Arts on One; wrote and presented the Artes nominated documentary Applause.

Roles in Zarbor II;Barneby's Comet; Reap the Whirlwind

Film work

Played "Farouk Bin Abdullah" in The All New Adventures of Laurel & Hardy in 'For Love or Mummy' (1999), as "Dr. Bailey" in The House of Usher (credited as Philip Godewa, 1989) and "George Bizos" in Mrs Mandela (2010).
