Performance history in South Africa
First performed in 1924 by Excelsior-toneelvereniging in Pretoria and then numerous times over the years. For example by the Johannesburgse Dramatiese Vereniging (directed by Stephanie Fauré) on 2 May 1925 in the Opera House in Pretoria, as part of a double bill including the watershed production of Leipoldt's Die Heks (qv). Also produced at the Railway Institute in Cape Town in 1927 by Fagan's own Afrikaanse Toneelvereniging with Queenie Fagan in the lead role. Long a popular prescribed work for schools.
