Directed Nommerpas (Hein Poole and Lee Roodt) (2015)

The writing duo combine Hein’s sketch comedy talents with Lee’s stand-up style to tell the story of a bookie and his clients as their fortunes rise and fall. Under the direction of Gaerin Hauptfleisch, Lee plays Lee Roy Brown, the patriarch in this gambling “family” while Hein breathes life into his quirky characters who believe that every cent they gamble will take them one step closer to their dreams. Derra the pensioner refuses to give up on his dreams, while Gail the hairstylist wants the life of Kim Kardashian. Boeta Chris, the car guard is sick of crime and wants to start his own security company while Kabouter the street walker wants to be an international businessman. Nommerpas is an apt metaphor for the highs and lows of everyday life, reminding audiences to not take things too seriously. “Life is a gamble. You win some, you lose some.” It can be full of both pain and joy, but like the characters in Nommerpas, its important is that we never lose our compassion.

Hein and Lee set about creating the production after comedy audiences in Paarl started asking for a theatre piece. With its combination of believable characters and audience interaction, Nommerpas will entertain regular theatre-goers and initiates alike.

Nommerpas will be staged at the Artscape Arena on Thursday 2, Saturday 4, Thursday 9 and Friday 10 July at 19:30 and at 16:30 on Saturday 11 July. Tickets are available from Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-Seat on 021 421 7695.
