The Showtime Awards were established in 1991 by Port Elizabeth theatre critic, Bob Eveleigh.

Known variously - according to the event's principal sponsor - as the Evening Post Showtime Awards or The Herald Showtime Awards.

The 2016 awards were sponsored by Clover. The annual Showtime 2018 Theatre Awards and production of Let the Good Times Roll were presented by Woodlands Dairy in collaboration with the PE Musical and Dramatic Society, supported by Business and Arts South Africa (BASA).
