The play is a stage adaptation of [[Johann Rossouw]]'s [[Afrikaans]] translation of the 1991 French novel ''[[Tous les Matins du Monde]]'' by Pascal Quignard (1948-). It tells the story of the musician Marin Marais's the apprenticeship in the house of the austere, reclusive and mysterious violist, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, who is obsessed with his late wife, and of Marais's romantic entanglements with his master's two daughters, Madeleine and Toinette. The novel was published by Gallimard in 1991.

Elke Oggend van die Wêreld ("Every morning of the world") is the title of an Afrikaans play by Emma Bekker.

The original text

The play is a stage adaptation of Johann Rossouw's Afrikaans translation of the 1991 French novel Tous les Matins du Monde by Pascal Quignard (1948-). It tells the story of the musician Marin Marais's the apprenticeship in the house of the austere, reclusive and mysterious violist, Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, who is obsessed with his late wife, and of Marais's romantic entanglements with his master's two daughters, Madeleine and Toinette. The novel was published by Gallimard in 1991.

In 1991 the French novel was made into a highly successful film by Alain Courneau.

In 2000 the novel was translated into Afrikaans by Johann Rossouw as Elke Oggend van die Wêreld and published by Protea Boekhuis.

It was subsequently adapted for the stage by Emma Bekker.
