The original text

Translations and adaptations

Roulette was translated from the original Czech (Ruleta) into German by Gerhard and Alexandra Baumrucker. It was from this version that André P. Brink translated the text into English.

A translation into Dutch was published by Nederlandse Vereniging voor Amateurtheater NCA, 2000.

Performance history in South Africa

1977: Presented in Afrikaans (the Brink translation) by CAPAB at the Nico Malan Theatre opening 18 November 1977. Directed by Pieter Fourie starring Helen Bourne (Lyuba), Errol Ross (Alexei), Vivienne Drummond (Madame), Roger Dwyer (Police Commissioner), John Whiteley (Captain), Sandra Ferreira (Elisa), Nerina Ferreira (Jeanette), Merle Lifson (Julia), Tarina Kleyn (Martha), Margot Luyt (Sophie), Neville Thomas (Markuscha), Philip Godawa (Lieutenant), Peter Krummeck (Pianist), David Crichton and Chris Truter (Police) and Peter Cartwright, Johan Esterhuizen, Neels Coetzee and Johan Botha (Officers).
