Richard Daneel (1922-) was a stage and film actor and director, and a well known mime-artist.


Biography

Born Richard van Heerden Daneel,

He was a contemporary of, and studied mime under Decroux with the internationally well known Marcel Marceau[1] (1923-2007).

He was married to Tjoekie Laubscher, who had been a dancer in the Teda de Moor contemporary dance company in the early 1950s.

Died tragically on the set of a film he was directing, when a light aircraft hit him while setting up the shot.

On stage

As actor:

He had a role in the NTO production of Mag ek Saamspeel? in 1959. He has also appeared in The Red Silk Umbrella (1962), The Playboy of the Western World (PACT (1963), The Affair (1963).


As director:

Productions include The Chairs (Ionesco) which he translated and directed for National Theatre Organisation in the NTO Kamertoneel (1959), Comoedia (a mime programme for NTO, 1960), Jean Anouilh’s Romeo and Jeanette for PACT (1963), Kiss Me, Kate (1967), Ring Round the Moon (1967) and Picnic in Town (1968).

In film

As actor:

Die Rebel (1976), Pressure Burst (1971), Seven Against the Sun (1964), Jy's Lieflik Vanaand (1962) and Stropers van die Laeveld (1962).

As director:

Stadig oor die Klippe (1969), Vrolike Vrydag die 13de (1969), and Oupa for Sale (1968).

As writer

Adapted and wrote the script for Vrolike Vrydag 13de (1969)
