Don Gil de las Calzas Verdes ("Don Gil of the Green Breeches") is a comedy by the Spanish Baroque dramatist, poet and Roman Catholic monk Tirso de Molina (1579–1648)[1].
Contents
The original text
Written in 1615 and first performed by the company of Pedro de Valdés at the Mesón de la Fruta in Toledo in July of that year. It was published for the first time in 1635, in the collection Las Comedias del Maestro Tirso de Molina (Part 4).
Translations and adaptations
Translated into German as Don Gil von den Grünen Hosen by Knut Boeser [2].
The Boeser translation was adapted and translated into Afrikaans as Don Dinges met die Groen Broek by Nerina Ferreira.

1984: Performed in Afrikaans as Don Dinges met die Groen Broek by PACT in the State Theatre Pretoria and in the Alexander Theatre, Johannesburg; directed by Dieter Reible, featuring Alida Theron (Dona Juana), Marie Pentz (Estella), Chris van Niekerk (Caramanchel), James Borthwick (Don Martin), Gys de Villiers (Osorio), Louis van Niekerk (Don Pedro), Tjaart Potgieter (Aguilar), Karin Fourie (Dona Ines), Pieter Brand (Don Juan), Louis Minnaar (Don Alfonso), Billy Second (Dona Klara) and others. Design by Chris van den Berg and lighting by Derek Markotter.
