Kristalvlakte ("Crystal flat" or "crystal plain") is a play by Amy Jephta.

The original text

It is a radical South African adaptation of Bertolt Brecht's anti-war play Mother Courage and her Children and is set on the Cape Flats. (For details: See the entry on Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder.)

Kristalvlakte was the end result of the Suidoosterfees's text development project and the project was based on an idea once proposed by Jakes Gerwel. The project was thus initiated in 2015 by the festival and the process was facilitated by playwright Tertius Kapp. Proposals were solicited for the adaptation of Brecht's work to a Cape Flats setting and 10 proposals were selected. Through workshops and rewrites the list of participants was reduced to five, of which one author - Amy Jephta - was finally selected to write the text for production.

The text was published by Tafelberg Uitgewers in Cape Town, 2016.
