How Now Brown Cow is a theatre and film production company.

The company

Founded by Julie-Anne McDowell during the Covid-19 pandemic of 2020, with Daniel Galloway as General Manager and Producer alongside Julie-Anne.

Based in South Africa, it is committed to presenting a range of world-class productions which particularly aims to commission, enable and empower South African theatre practitioners.

2022/2023: The Beauty Queen Of Leenane

2023: A Marry Little Christmas (with The Market Theatre)

2024: Expelled

2024/2025: My Name is Lucy Barton

2025: Dear Evan Hansen

The Writer's Collective

The Writer's Collective, a scriptwriting project, was initiated by the company in 2020, when they commissioned 12 first draft scripts, which were then mentored by theatre makers William Nicholson, Greg Homann and Paul Warwick-Griffin. Several eventually reached second and final draft stages and 2023 saw two of these plays produced by How Now Brown Cow.
