Original text
The musical follows Evan Hansen, a high school senior with social anxiety, "who invents an important role for himself in a tragedy that he did not earn".
The musical opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016, after the show's world premiere at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. in July 2015, and an Off-Broadway production at Second Stage Theatre from March to May 2016.
Translations and adaptations
In 2021 a film was released, directed by Stephen Chbosky and written by Steven Levenson (in his feature film screenwriting debut), based on the 2015 stage musical by Levenson, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Ben Platt plays the title role, reprising the performance that he originated on stage six years earlier.

2025: Presented by Showtime Management & How Now Brown Cow Productions at Artscape, Cape Town and Teatro at Montecasino, Johannesburg, with direction by Greg Karvellas, with musical supervision by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder and set, lighting, and costume design by Niall Griffin. The musical director is Kurt Haupt, David Classen is the sound designer and Louisa Talbot is choreographer. Technical direction by Alistair Kilbee. With Stuart Brown as Evan, Lucy Tops as Heidi Hansen, Justin Swartz as Jared Kleinman, Ntshikeng Matooane as Alana Beck, Keely Crocker as Zoe Murphy, Michael Stray as Connor Murphy, Sharon Spiegel Wagner as Cynthia, Charlie Bouguenon as Larry Murphy, Shelley Lothian, Léa Blerk, Arno Meyer and Kent Jaycocke.
