Danny and the Deep Blue Sea is a play by John Patrick Shanley (1950-)[].

Not to be confused with Terence Rattigan's The Deep Blue Sea.


The original text

A one act play, set in the Bronx, tells the story of Danny, a brooding, self-loathing young man, and Roberta, a divorced, guilt-ridden young woman, who strike up a conversation in a bar.

The play premiered at the Circle in the Square Theatre, New York City, in June 1983.

Performance history in South Africa

1986: Presented by The Company, it opened Upstairs at the Market on 20 January. Directed by Lucille Gillwald with Danny Keogh and Lesley Nott. Lighting design by Wesley France, set design by Nadya Cohen.
