Absurd Person Singular is a 1972 play by British playwright Alan Ayckbourn (1939-)[1].

Subject

Divided into three acts, the play documents the changing fortunes of three married couples. Each act takes place at a Christmas celebration at one of the couples' homes on successive Christmas Eves. [2]

Translated into Afrikaans as Derde Party by Martelize Kolver (2009).

Performance history in South Africa

1977: Staged by The Company at the Market Theatre in November, co-directed by John Hussey and Mannie Manim, with Diane Appleby, Graham Armitage, Naomi Buch, Wilson Dunster, Kerry Jordan and Gay Lambert. Designed by Anthony Farmer.

1978: Staged in the Baxter Theatre, directed by Ken Leach (opening 9 June), with Henry Goodman (Sidney), Grethe Fox (Jane), Keith Grenville (Ronald), Sandra Prinsloo (Marion), Wilson Dunster (Geoffrey) and Michele Maxwell (Eva). Designed by Cecilia Pienaar, lighting by Derrick Markotter.

1979: Produced by the Rhodes University Drama Department, directed by Chris Weare, starring Lesley Winslow, David Alcock, Mary-Anne Naudé, Jamie Crawford and Sandy Dacombe, April 1979.

1998: Staged in the Momentum Theatre at the State Theatre in June, directed by Rex Garner, with Rex Garner (Ronald), Clare Marshall (Marion), Malcolm Terrey (Sidney), Annelisa Weiland (Jane), Robert Fridjhon (Geoffrey) and Geraldine Garner (Eva).

2009: Staged at the Klein Libertas Teater, Stellenbosch in Afrikaans as Derde Party, directed by Juanita Swanepoel, with Susanne Beyers, Johann Nel, Petrus du Preez, Martelize Kolver, Gaerin Hauptfleisch and Stephanie Hough. Set by Gaerin Hauptfleisch.
