Susanne Beyers

Susanne Beyers (1954-) Actress for stage, radio and TV, and columnist.

In some sources incorrectly billed as Susan Beyers or Suzanne Beyers.

Biography

Born on 12 Decmber, 1954 she completed high school at Tygerberg High in the Cape, taking drama classes and working on radio from her first high school years. She then obtained a B.A. Drama from the Stellenbosch University Drama Department .

Initially working as an English teacher, she gradually moved into radio, TV and stage as actress. She joined the Stellenbosch University Drama Department as a part-time lecturer in acting in 2001.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Her stage work includes work for CAPAB (in Port Elizabeth), including The Merchant of Venice and Much Ado about Nothing. She did children's theatre there, being involved in setting up a company called Keedo, and touring the region. Moving to Cape Town she once more took up children's theatre and worked on festival productions, inter alia for Spektrum Produksies, doing Afrikaans works such as Dalk is ons almal so, Die Uurwerk Kantel (Woordfees, 2003), Drafstap of Drentel, Susanna die Geliefde, Moeders en Dogters.

Other productions include The Manne (National Arts Festival Fringe 1995, Man, Manner, Manste (1998), Ou Blare, Jong Dames Dinamiet, Newsroom, Die Sterkere (1975), Yerma, Die Ryk Weduwee, Derde Party.

A well known radio actress, she also did voice work (including TV dubbing) and was a presenter and newsreader for both Radio Algoa and Radio Sonder Grense over the years, while her TV credits include an award-winning performance in the iconically successful series Arende, and roles in Onder Draai die Duiwel Rond, Dennekruin 12, Die Seders van Lebanon, Die man met 'n lyk om sy nek, Jasper le Feuvre, Samaritaan, Beyond Return, Mandela and De Klerk (a made-for-TV movie, 1997), Erfsondes, Soutmansland.

As a journalist she has written articles for most Afrikaans journals, and since 2001 she had a regular column in Die Burger, interviewing prominent people in the arts community.

Awards, etc

She was nominated as Best Actress on television for Arende III: Dorsland in 1994.
