20th Century Fox was an American film production and distribution company.

History

It was founded on May 31, 1935, by the merger of Fox Film Corporation and Twentieth Century Pictures, and was one of the original "Big Five" among eight majors of Hollywood's Golden Age.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

In 1956, 20th Century Fox bought African Consolidated Theatres Ltd, and in 1959, African Film Productions was bought out by 20th Century Fox for $1,125,000, and renamed South African Screen Productions.

In 1969, South African financial services group Sanlam bought the business, renaming it Kinekor. At that point, Sanlam already owned Ster Films and Ster Theatres. The government permitted Sanlam to merge the three companies - Ster Films, Ster Theatres and Kinekor - which they subsequently did as Ster-Kinekor in 1970.

For more information post-1969, see Ster-Kinekor.
