Founding and early history

UPE Theatrum was a drama society founded by Bruce Sanderson in 1974 at the University of Port Elizabeth (now Nelson Mandela University). The Latin name was given because of the dual medium language status of UPE. Patrick Scott was chairman from 1976 until 1981.

1975: The first production was How are you Johnnie? in the Port Elizabeth Opera House. Directed by Cecil Steyn. Cast: Bruce Sanderson (Johnnie), Errol Hart, George Jones, Chris Bartlett, Fiona ??

1976: Afrikaners is Plesierig directed by Errol Hart at the UPE Auditorium.

1983: Theatrum produced Oliver! at the Port Elizabeth Opera House. Directed by Johan van Der Westhuizen. Cast: Eddie Ferreira (Oliver), Robin Emslie Williams (Nancy), Alan Williams (Fagin), Julie Hartley (Bet), Patrick Scott (Bill Sykes).
