Shirley Ellis (19**-) Actress, Director.

Biography

Her brother is the actor Jan Ellis.

Training

Shirley studied drama at the University of Cape Town.

Career

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

As a student she acted in Marcus Brutus (1982), The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Insect Play (1983).

As professional actress she acted in Panics (1992), Thina Bantu - We People, Die Van Aardes van Grootoor.

She assisted James Blankenberg as director of Liefdeskringloop in 1987.

She directed Die Kaalkop Prima Donna (1987), Wyn, Dikker as Water, Onder die Brug, Kerrie Karma, Blougat, The Trojan Women (NAF 1984).

Shirley directed Hennie van Greunen’s Lyf in 2000 and several productions of the English version of the play, Normality, from 2010 onwards

Among her appearances on television are in Torings and Konings.

Awards, etc

Winner of the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Most Promising Student in 1984.

She was nominated for a Vita Award (Free State region) as Best Director for Onder die Brug, 1999.
