The play was written in German with the title Leonce und Lena. It was first performed in Munich in 1895 by an amateur group.

Afrikaans translation by Wilma Stockenström and Ants Kirsipuu titled Leonce en Lena.

Another Afrikaans translation by Tjaart Potgieter is titled Die Opstand van die Narre.
