Kristalvlakte
Kristalvlakte ("Crystal flat" or "crystal plain") is a play by Amy Jephta. It is an South African adaptation of Brecht's anti-war play Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder and is set on the Cape Flats.
Kristalvlakte was the end result of the Suidoosterfees's text development project and the projhect was based on an idea once proposed by Jakes Gerwel. The project was thus initiated in 2015 by the festival and the process was facilitated by playwright Tertius Kapp. Proposals were solicited for the adaptation of Brecht's work to a Cape Flats setting and 10 proposals were selected. Through workshops and rewrites the list of participants was reduced to five, of which one author - Amy Jephta - was finally selected to write the text for production.
The play was first performed at the Suidoosterfees on 29 April, 2016, directed by Marí Bortslap-Calitz with Ilse Klink, Dean Smith, Tarryn Wyngaard, Antonio Fischer, Bianca Flanders, Brendon Daniels, Roysten Stoffels, Daniel Richards, Gantane Kusch, Riaan Visman and Ruben Engel.
