Elke Duim 'n Koning ("Every inch a king") is a play by Pieter Fourie (1940-2021).


The original text

A play based on the life and death of the famed Afrikaans actor, André Huguenet, written in the 2001, forty years after the death of the great actor-manager. First performed in 2001, with additions by the director, then published by Protea Boekhuis in 2002. Both performance and text were highly regarded as a tribute to a theatre legend, though assessments of the quality of the play varied, many finding some of the references to theatre matters and personalities in the play rather obscure for non-specialists.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

2001: First performed at the KKNK festival on 2nd April by Rooderandt Produksies, in cooperation with the ATKV and was directed by Jaco Bouwer with Gavin van den Bergh, Rolanda Marais and Bongile Mantsai. Van den Bergh won the best actor award on this occasion.

2001: Performed in the H.B. Thom Theatre in Stellenbsoch, 17 to 21 April, with the same cast.

2001: Performed on The Fringe at the Grahamstown Festival in July 2001.

2001: Performed in the André Huguenet Theatre in Bloemfontein, Huguenet's home town, opening with a gala evening on 25 April and playing till 5 Mei, the performance was accompanied by an exhibition called André Huguenet: Die meester – Gerhardus Petrus Borstlap tot teaterlegende in the foyer of the theatre, mounted by the National Afrikaans Literary Museum and Research Centre (NALN) and opened by veteran actor Patrick Mynhardt.
