The original text

Performed by the Hof-Schauspieler-Gesellschaft and published by Bloch in 1805.

Translations and adaptations

Adapted into French as Le Mari Ermite by Jean François Boursault-Malherbe, and presented for tnhe first time at Le Théâtre des Variétés Étrangères on 12 January, 1807 and published by Antoine-Augustyn Renouard in the same year.

Translated from the French version into Dutch by Cornelis van der Vijver as De Echtgenoot Kluizenaar, published in Amsterdam by J. S. van Esveldt-Holtrop, 1809.

Translated into English by an unknown author as The Confession and published 1820.


Performance history in South Africa

1824: Performed in Dutch as De Echtgenoot Kluizenaar by Tot Nut en Vermaak on 28 August in the African Theatre, with De Verkeerde Schaamte (Von Kotzebue) as afterpiece.
