The original text
Produced by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop and premiered at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, a socialist fringe theatre in London, on 27 May 1958.
A Taste of Honey comments on, and puts into question, class, race, gender and sexual orientation in mid-twentieth-century Britain.
Translations and adaptations
The play was adapted into an award winning film of the same title in 1961 with an entirely different cast except for Murray Melvin as Geoff.
Performance history in South Africa
1960: Produced in South Africa at the Library Theatre, Johannesburg, by Taubie Kushlick and Leon Gluckman in 1960 starring Olive Wright and Roslyn Ellis.
1964: Edwin Polakow directed a production by the University of Cape Town's University Dramatic Society at the Little Theatre in May.
