Die Journalisten
Die Journalisten ("the journalists") is a German a comedy in four acts by Gustav Freytag (1816-1895)[1].

The original text
Based on Freytag's experience as editor of the Leipzig periodical Die Grenzboten (1848 to 1860), it was first performed in 1852 and first printed in 1854.
Regarded as one of the most successful German comedies, it in cluded in theatre repertoires over the course of more than five decades.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Afrikaans and transposed to a South African setting as Die Koerantskrywers (lit "the newspaper writers") by J.F.W. Grosskopf.
The text first published by Nasionale Pers Beperk in 1919.
Filmed as Die Journalisten[2] for German TV by Fritz Umgelter[3] in 1961.
Performance history in South Africa
1919: First performed in Afrikaans by the Grey-Universiteitskollege (G.U.K.) Toneelvereniging in 1919, with inter alia S. van der Merwe, Helena Bergstedt, Dirk Mostert, Francois Eybers and M.C.E. Lindeque, directed by Rose Ehrlich and Grosskopff. Toured the Free State.
1938: Produced in Afrikaans by the Krugersdorp Municipal Dramatic and Operatic Society on 9 and 16 April.
