Broer Matie

Broer Matie is a South African Afrikaans film that was released on 20 July 1984. It is the last film to be directed and produced by Jans Rautenbach. The film takes place in the Klein Karoo region. The scenes outside the church were shot in De Rust in the Western Cape. The scenes inside the church were shot more than 1 000 km away at the Dutch Reformed Church in Boksburg, Gauteng.

The film

Upon the death of a respected farmer of the Klein Karoo region his testament reveals that he would like a coloured minister to officiate at his funeral. It's 1961 and the policy of apartheid is very much the order of the day. As the white church board discusses the farmer's request, a drama of human relationships plays out in the local community.

Production team

The film was produced by Jans Rautenbach (producer) and Louis Moller (co-producer). Cinematography was by James Robb and film editing was by Elsa Bijker (chief editor), Harry Hughes and Ilse Scherz. Casting was by Trudie Taljaard while Mark Engels, Luke Kgofelo, Sid Knowles and Kevin Montanari were responsible for sound. The camera operators were Terence Maritz and Mark Meyer and music was taken care of by Bobby Louw (musical arranger) and Boet Pretorius (director: music recordings). The production assistants of the additional crew for the film were Chris Botha, Elizabeth Ferreira, May Hill, Jeni Moir, Rudi Trap and Tony van Rensburg. Antoinette van Speyk was the assistant to the director.
