Philippus du Plessis Grobler

Philippus du Plessis Grobler (1919-1968) was a literary critic, teacher, lecturer and radio actor.

Also credited as P. du P. Grobler in some sources.

Biography

Born Philippus du Plessis Grobler in 9 January,1919, and became a teacher for a time and then lecturer in Afrikaans at the Natal University College.

In 1957 he completed a doctorate at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg with a thesis on Vormprobleme van die versdrama ("Problems of form in verse drama", Unpublished). doctoral dissertation. : University of Natal.

He passed away on 11 September, 1968.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He wrote and broadcast a range of articles and reviews on Afrikaans literature over the years for journals like Standpunte, Theoria and Die Huisgenoot. Omonh them there is trenchant though negative review of the first full translation of Hamlet into Afrikaans " Hamlet in Afrikaans", Standpunte (Jaargang 2 No. 1 1945: pp. 50-59).

A selection of his writings and broadcasts are contianed in Verkenning (Human & Rousseau, 1962).

He was a part-time radio actor for the SABC.
