Leon Kruger (1972-2021). Actor, playwright.

Biography

Born on 12 October, 1972 in Vanderbijlpark, he grew up in Kibler Park in the southern suburbs of Johannesburg.

He studied at the Stellenbosch University Drama Department, but did not complete the course due to a back operation. He then studied radio broadcasting at the Cape Technicon and Birbeck College at the London School of Radio.

He died on 15 July, 2021, in Bellville, Cape Town, of COVID-19 complications, leaving his wife Frieda van den Heever and their two sons Basjan and Eugi.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He acted in Testosmoroon (2003) and in Toorberg (2005).

His play Oupa en Ouma sit op die stoep was performed at Aardklop in 2009. This was followed by Oupa en Ouma sit op die stoep en raak romanties in 2013.

Leon wrote and directed Ou Blare, Innie Rof (a comedy about gholf, performed at the Kalfiefees in 2015)) and Hie' Sit die Manne, acted in Mike van Graan’s Die Generaal, God van Chaos (2011), Net ‘n Chilliburger en Chips Asseblief!, wrote and performed in Klei, wrote Strip! and Skollies. He also wrote the drama Weg which was performed at Aardklop in 2006. He acted in Kruger kook: 'n Resep vir Moeilikheid in 2008. His drama Trolliekind also had its debut then with André Jacobs, Ivan Abrahamse and Joanie Combrink.

Awards, etc.

His drama Klei was nominated for a Smeltkroesprys in 2001.
