He has a B-Tech Degree in Stage Lighting Design and Arts Administration.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Over the years he has designed the lighting for over 230 productions covering all facets of the performing arts.
In 2000 he started Congo Blue Design, one of South Africa's leading lighting design and consulting companies. Declan hosts weekend workshops on the art and craft of lighting design and has over the years served as resident lighting designer for State Theatre Dance Company, Black Ties Ensemble and Opera Africa.
Included among his credits are Aida, Saturday Night Fever, Rewind, African Footprint, Play@Risk, Skroot, Coupé, Shopping and Fucking, Comrades Arms, Stand in the Sun (1999), The Tale of the Allergist's Wife (2002), Ain't Misbehavin' (2006 Market Theatre), MacBeki (Market Theatre 2009), Starlight Express 2013, Sister Act 2015.
He has written a book on lighting design.

Declan has been nominated for several awards for his designs and won a scholarship to attend Broadway Lighting Master Class in New York City.
In 1998 he won a Vita Award (Gauteng region) for Shopping and Fucking and in 2004 a Naledi Award for African Footprint.
