Sister Act is a musical written by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater.

Original text

Adapted from the hit 1992 film of the same name. The story follows Deloris Van Cartier, a lounge singer who witnesses a murder and is placed in a convent under witness protection. While there, she transforms the convent choir with her unique, soulful style, ultimately finding her voice and sisterhood.

After having a regional premiere in 2006, in Pasadena, California, the original West End production opened on June 2, 2009, at the London Palladium.

Performance history in South Africa

2015: In South Africa the musical was staged on The Mandela stage at the Joburg Theatre from July 10th to August 16th 2015, directed by Janice Honeyman with Kate Normington as Mother Superior, Candida Mosoma as disco diva Deloris Van Cartier.

2017: Presented by the Waterfront Theatre Company at Artscape Arena, directed by Paul Griffiths, musical director Garth Tavares and Jaco Griessel, Choreography by Genna Galloway.
