Born in Nababeep, Namakwaland, matriculated in Cape Town, B.Sc. degree from the University of Pretoria.

He has appeared on stage in productions of Die Verhoor (André P. Brink) (Johannes Londt, PACT 1980), Twaalfde Nag (Valentino, PACT 1981), Plaston: DNS-Kind (Plaston in a PACOFS production 1981 by arrangement with PACT), Die Goue Kring (PACOFS 1982), Die Potlooddief en die Engel (Tonie [[PACT}} 1985]], The Time of the Hyena (Hannes Botha PACT 1986), Harold en Maude (SWARUK 1986), Panorama (Grahamstown Festival, 1987), Kyk Hoe Hol Hulle (PACT 1987) and Die Hertekoning (PACT as Deramo).
