Richard van der Westhuizen (1958-). Actor, singer, song-writer.

Biography

Born in Nababeep, Namaqualand, matriculated in Cape Town, B.Sc. degree from the University of Pretoria.

He made his stage debut in Die Van Aardes van Grootoor (1979), thereafter appearing in productions of Lappies die Lappiesmous (as the cobbler Levitikus PACT Playwork, 1979), Die Staatsgetuie by Agatha Christie, (1979, Windhoekteater), Die Verhoor (André P. Brink) (Johannes Londt, PACT 1980), Twaalfde Nag (Valentino, PACT 1981), Plaston: DNS-Kind (Plaston in a PACOFS production 1981 by arrangement with PACT), Die Goue Kring (PACOFS 1982), Robin van der Merwe of Knysna Forest (1984), Die Potlooddief en die Engel (Tonie PACT 1985), The Time of the Hyena (Hannes Botha PACT 1986), Harold en Maude (SWARUK 1986), Soldate Vryers (SWARUK, 1987), Hamlet (1987, Staatsteater, Pretoria), Minnaar onder die Wapen 1987, Windhoekteater ;Panorama (Grahamstown Festival, 1987), Kyk Hoe Hol Hulle (PACT 1987) and Die Hertekoning (PACT as Deramo); Die Laaste Strooi (KKNK 1998), Water en Klip, Kom terug, Saartjie (KKNK 2005) and Vlerksleep (2025).

An accomplished musician, singer and composer, he wrote the original music for the PACT productions of Double Trouble (1980) and The State Theatre Overflow Show in 1982 and many other productions.

He also had many roles in radio plays, inclduing Pendoring & Seun (1994); Die Laaste van die Takhare (1980s, repeated on RSG in 2013); Gelykheid en broederskap(2024); .

He was one of the leading actors in a number of television series, such as Ballade vir 'n Enkeling, Agter Elke Man, 7de Laan, Plek van die Vleisvreters Binnelanders, Samaritaan (1998) and Andries Plak (2007).

Film roles include appearances in Karate Kallie, Bakgat 2, Fanie Fourie se Lobola, Die Ballade van Robbie de Wee and Treurgrond.
