Anna Richter-Visser (b. Bloemfontein, 13/05/1914 – d. Bloemfontein, 25/06/1997) was a stage, film and television actress, elocutionist, stage director, teacher, wardrobe designer and makeup artist.

Biography

Anna Jacoba Maria Richter-Visser was born in 1914 to Schalk Willem Visser and his wife, Anna Maria Jacoba Meyer. As stage actress she started in Cape Town when she acted in Maurice Maeterlinck’s Die Indringer (1935) in a performance for the Afrikaanse Nasionale Studentebond at the University of Cape Town. This was followed by C. Louis Leipoldt’s Die Heks for the Kaapstadse Afrikaanse Toneelvereniging. The cast also included her then new husband, A.M. Burger. In 1939 she and Aletta Gericke founded the Kunsskool in Stellenbosch, which later became the Akademie vir Dramakuns. Soon afterwards she and Burger moved to Bloemfontein, where she became a leading figure in the local Afrikaans amateur theatre society, the Teatergroep. Suzanne van Wyk replaced her at the ADK. She also acted in several films, but came to specialise in wardrobe and costume design.
