Ladies in Retirement is a play by English playwrights Edward Percy [1] and Reginald Denham [2].

The original text

A gothic thriller in three acts, based on a famous murder which actually took place at the end of the 19th century, the play is set in 1885. The drama focuses on Ellen Creed, a housekeeper who looks after Leonora Fiske, a retired actress living in the English countryside. When Ellen’s eccentric sisters visit their sibling at Leonora’s home, tensions soon lead to murder. Though the death is carefully covered up, will the murderess get away with her crime, or will she be brought to justice?[3]

Written in 1939, the play was first performed on 12 December 1939, at St James’s Theatre, London, directed by Reginald Denham. With its 1940 Broadway production that starred Flora Robson in the lead role, itd went on to become a huge hit in New York and elsewhere.
