Kiss of the Spiderwoman

Kiss of the Spiderwoman (Spanish: El beso de la mujer araña) a 1976 novel by Argentine author Manuel Puig (1932-1990) [1], as well as the name of a play by the author, based on his novel[2].

The original text

The novel depicts the daily conversations between two cellmates in an Argentine prison, Molina and Valentín, and the intimate bond they form in the process.[3])

Performance history in South Africa

1989: Staged by NAPAC, directed by Murray McGibbon, with Gary d'Alessandro as Valentin.

1989: Directed by Laurens Cilliers, with Dawid Minnaar as "Molina" and Kevin Smith as "Valentin".

2009: Presented by The Company (probably KickstArt Theatre Company) at the Catalina Theatre, directed by Clare Mortimer, November 2009.

2011: A production directed by Lynne Maree, starring seasoned actor Brian Webber as the effeminate window-dresser, Molina, who has been imprisoned for gross indecency and Garth Collins as Valentin, jailed for his revolutionary activities was staged in a performance area at the Joburg Theatre called Space. com.

2021: A production was scheduled for production at The Baxter Theatre in 2021, directed by Sylvaine Strike, with Mbulelo Grootboom as "Valentin" and Wessel Pretorius as "Molina", with lighting design by Mannie Manim, set and costume design by Wolf Britz and music by Brendan Jury. The show was cancelled however because of the COVID-19 regulations at the time.

2022: The 2021 production was re-scheduled for performance at The Baxter Theatre in 2022.
