Dis ‘n stormagtige nag op ‘n skip. ‘n Meisie bevind haar op die skeepsdek, alhoewel sy weet dat die veiligste plek eintlik haar kajuit sou wees. Nogtans bly sy, en ontmoet sy ’n geheimsinnige jong man. Dadelik is dit asof hulle mekaar ‘n leeftyd al ken. In die verwarring van golwe, seewater en wind raak dit al hoe moeiliker om helder te dink. Wanneer reuse golwe oor die dek spoel, en jy skaars kan sien wat om jou aangaan, is dit maklik om perspektief te verloor. Later wonder jy: waar is ek, en hoe lank is ek al hier? Maar net soos wat ‘n storm op die see vrees en verwarring bring, bring dit later ook kalmte en rus. En nuwe geleenthede. Ander dinge om te beleef.

Wysie oor die Water is a short story by Albert Short.

The original text

A story about a girl finds herself on the deck of a ship during a stormy night, even though she knows that the safest place would actually be her cabin. Nevertheless, she stays, and meets and bonds with a mysterious young man, and amid the confusion of waves, seawater, and wind. Yet just as a storm at sea brings fear and confusion, it also brings calm and peace. And new opportunities and experiences.

The story adapted for radio by staff and students of the studio Innovation for the Blind in Worcester.

2024: Broadcast on the SABC radio station RSG on 28 November, produced by Gavin Grundlingh and directed b Sarel van der Westhuizen, with Sanna Antonie and FC Smit. Violin music by Morné van der Merwe.
