The original text
La Musica evolved from a 1965 radio script for the BBC into the stage play, that tells of a recently divorced couple (Michel and Anne-Marie, or Elle and Lui) who meet by chance in a hotel in a provincial French town on the evening their divorce is finalized. They spend the night talking through the pain, passion, and reasons behind the collapse of their relationship.
The original stage version premiered on October 8, 1965, at the Studio des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Translations and adaptations
A film with the same title was directed by Duras and Paul Séban, based on Duras' own play and radio script.
The play was translated into Afrikaans and adapted as a television script by Stephan Bouwer in 1972 and initially performed as an experimental piece for an SABC course in TV directing. This version featured Wilna Snyman, Nic de Jager and Elsa Fouché.
In 1976 the Afrikaans script was reworked and turned into a formal TV production, directed by Stephan Bouwer with Wilna Snyman, Marius Weyers, Miems de Bruyn, Jana Cilliers and Errol Ross. It was recorded on 1 and 2 March, 1976, and broadcast for the first time on 23 August, 1976.
The final TV script, edited by Renske Koen, was published by Human and Rousseau in 1978.
Performance history in South Africa
