Speak Magazine (1982-1994) was a highly influential popular culture publication.

Not to be confused with the short lived theatre journal, Speak (1977-1979), founded by Rob Amato (1943-2006).

The publication

Founded in 1982 by nine women activists in Johannesburg, namely Sandy Africa, Monica Algulhas, Sheila Jalobe, Gugu Mji, Pregs Govender, Vanessa Taylor, Karen Hurt, Shamim Meer and Jane Quinn. The aim was to provide a platform for women in communities and trade unions to voice their concerns and share organizing experiences. Both men and women read the magazine and were able to write to the editors with any questions or comments about articles as well as health questions. As women’s rights organisations grew, so did the magazine. SPEAK’s last issue was published in 1994.
