The original text
Based on John Vanbrugh's The Relapse (1696), removing much of the bawdy content, the play was first performed on 24 February 1777. The text published in Sheridan's Plays, Dent, 1906.
Performance history in South Africa
1929: Performed by the University Players in the Assembly Hall at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), with Pat Maloney, Margaret Girdwood, Dr Stammers.
1990: The play was presented by University Theatre Stellenbosch in the H.B. Thom Theatre, directed by Ralph Lawson, starring Arnold Hoon, Waldemar Schultz, Erik de Waal, André van der Merwe, Juan Els, Pedro Kruger, Jaco Bouwer, and others.
