The Jewish Dramatic Society was founded in 1896 at Baltic House Hall (previously the Fox Street Convent), in Fox Street, Johannesburg. The local community was so hungry for arts and entertainment that houses were "crowded nightly to the doors by Gentiles as well as Jews".

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

The Society presented Yiddish plays such as Di tsvey Kuni-Leml (written 1880, probably performed in German as Zwei Kuhne Lemels) and Bar Kochba (written 1883), both by Avrom Goldfaden (1840-1908)[1].
