The publishing house
Founded by the Dutch and South African bookseller August Aimé Balkema (1906-1996)[1] in 1946.
Besides historical and academic publications, it was also a publisher of innovative and controversial literary works, including play texts, such as Guy Butler's, including The Dam (1953), Cape Charade (1968) and Take Root or Die (1970); Athol Fugard's The Coat and Don Maclennan's and The Third Degree (in one volume, subtitled "Two Experiments in Improvisation", 1971),
