The novel

Meulenhof se Mense ("The people of Meulenhof") tells the story of the three Vermeulen sisters, the only ones of the proud Vermeulen family who still remain in the old homestead, who are forced to take in a lodger.

It initially appeared in the popular women's journal Sarie Marais in 1956, was then published as a novel in 1961 by Human & Rousseau, Cape Town (and reprinted numerous times since).

In the 1960s it was apparently also broadcast as a radio drama/reading by the Afrikaans service of the SABC and in 1980 it was folmed and broadcast as a TV series by SABC TV. For the latter adaptation, see below.
